MY TOP NETFLIX, HULU, and AMAZON PRIME PICKS // what to stream during covid-19

Cheers (4).jpg

With the increased amount of time we are all spending at home, most of us are looking for new shows and movies to keep us company. I asked you all for your top recommendations, and I’ve compiled them into a list. I’ve split them up between Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime (which temporarily includes all HBO content as well). I’ll also mark our top picks to narrow things down a bit.

NETFLIX

Netflix hosts the most content BY FAR out of the three main streaming platforms, so there is plenty to choose from here, and might be your best bet if you can only choose one platform.

Abbigayle’s Top Recommendations:

  • Love is Blind if you haven’t delved into the reality show everyone is talking about, now is the time to do it. This show is nothing short of WILD, and the cast of characters will keep you invested, whether you’re hate watching or falling in love.

  • Tiger King - Fair warning, that this show is intense, and if gay, polygamist, tiger wrangling cult leaders don’t sound like your type of thing, this may not be the show for you. But I can honestly say it is the craziest thing I’ve seen in years and it had me on the edge of my seat the whole time.

  • Sex Education - Gillian Anderson in beautiful silk robes, a pair of star-crossed teen lovers turned amateur sex therapists, and heartwarming story lines of young people learning to love themselves. What more could you want?

  • Grace & Frankie -The series stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin in the title roles of Grace and Frankie, two unlikely friends who are brought together after their husbands announce that they are in love with each other and plan to get married. I love everything about this show and it’s hilarious.

  • The Imposters - hands down my favorite drama I’ve seen in a long time.

  • A Simple Favor (Movie) - The only way I know how to describe this film : A movie that goes incredibly off the rails, but knows exactly what kind of movie it is. It could so easily be cheesy and terrible, but it’s a MUST WATCH.

Your Netflix Recs:

Amazon Prime / HBO

Amazon Prime Video has a much smaller selection of TV shows than Netflix, but their shows consistently win Academy Awards. Needless to say, if you are looking for quality over quantity, Amazon Prime Video is your place to go. A huge plus is that currently, your prime video package also includes all HBO content. So if you finally want to see what all the Game of Thrones or Westworld hype is about, now is your time.

Abbigayle’s Recommendations:

  • Fleabag - I cannot overstate my love for this series. Seriously, if I had to pick one single TV show of the past five years that I think everyone should watch, it’s this show. It’s gorgeous, hilarious, heartbreaking, and the type of show you want to watch again as soon as it's over. From the brilliant Phoebe Waller Bridge, this show centers around Fleabag, a young woman fumbling her way through life after the tragic loss of her best friend. Do yourself a favor and watch this one.

  • Westworld - If you’re looking for a show with more twists than you can count, this is the show for you.

  • Mozart in the Jungle - Classical music and a classic love story. This sweet comedy is a go to feel good series.

Your Recommendations:

HULU

Hulu is a great option if you regularly watch cable television and want broader and less restricted access to the content you would normally record on your DVR. They also have tiers of subscription depending on how many ads you’re willing to sit through and how much content you want and need access to. I watched The Bachelor exclusively on Hulu this season, but they also have a lot of incredible original content. Below are some of our top picks.

Abbigayle’s Recommendations:

  • Killing Eve - Created by Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller Bridge, this show stars Sandra Oh, a British agent searching for an international female assassin. This academy award winning show is a fast paced thriller.

  • Pen15 - This show is incredible and original. The premise: two middle-school girls explore frienship, dating, and all the awkward parts of being 13. The catch? The two middle-schoolers are played by adults (Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle) while everyone else around them is their true ages.
