Why Body Confidence Matters
I recently got a message asking why everyone who’s above a size 14 feels the need to proclaim their body confidence to the world. “Why can’t you just live your life without talking about it all the time, like smaller women?”
Here’s why. 👇🏼
1️⃣First of all, REPRESENTATION MATTERS. I grew up ONLY seeing thin women in the media who were confident. Every “bigger” woman was a comedian or a joke. When people tell me their 8 year old daughter is worried about being fat, I tell them to show them fat women on social media who are confident and successful and thriving.
Don’t you think we’d all have a lot less body image issues if we weren’t conditioned to be so afraid of being FAT? Hey, maybe we would actually live healthier and balanced lives if we didn’t deprive ourselves (dieting) and then completely binge because of restriction (results in weight cycling). I don’t know. Just a thought. 😉
2️⃣Second, let me remind you. HEALTH can come at ANY SIZE. You cannot judge someone’s health on how they look. It is so important that we end this weight stigma. I recently got a message from a reader who went misdiagnosed due to her weight (doctor kept saying she just needed to lose weight), and just found out it wasn’t the weight at all... she has cancer.
3️⃣Lastly... THAT sort of thinking is what will hold us back from being the type of world we all want to live in. Seeing women who have always been INCREDIBLY underrepresented in the media, loving on their bodies and working on body acceptance... that should be a beautiful and inspiring thing to you. But if it bothers you, think about why that is. And then get to work on your heart.
