BUT WHY, MOMMY?! WHY?!

Ahh, yes, the unmistakable question coming from my three-year old’s mouth every single hour of every single day. Sound familiar?!

As Emaline gets older, she seems to want to know WHY about everything. Why are the trees green? Why am I not allowed to have chocolate for dinner? Why is it bedtime but the sun is still out? And more recently, why do you have to go do work, Mommy?

More often than not, this is hard for me to answer. I grew up with my mom staying home with my brother and I until I started Elementary school. I was so close with her (still am) and wanted to be by her side always. She started working full time as a single mom and went on to build an amazing career. I watched her do this. I watched her succeed at seemingly everything she tried when it came to her work. Everytime I would visit, everyone would rant and rave about her. It was obvious that she did very well and was very well liked. I wanted to be just like her when I grew up.

Funny enough, her work ethic and hustle was instilled in me and I’ve never been able to shake that feeling. I love nothing more than to start a project, finish it, look back at it and be proud. So when I had Emaline, I really had to re-evaluate what I was doing with my life and my career.

I worked SO hard to build an amazing career as an assistant costume designer in the film industry. But if you’re in the industry, you know the 12-14 hours a day minimum, 5 days a week weren’t physically and mentally allowing me to be the type of mother that I wanted to be and that Emaline needed. I had to make a change.

That’s when I launched House of Dorough. My mission with this blog has always been to reach other people through my experiences in body image struggles and being a plus size woman who loves fashion. The messages I get daily about how my shorts try on changed your life, or how just by seeing me live out my dreams it’s inspired you to wear that jumpsuit you’ve been so afraid to wear… or how my openness about postpartum has given you the strength to seek help.. these are all things that are part of my WHY. I absolutely love connecting with each and every one of you, even though I’m super behind on my DM’s right now (I’m sorrrrry!!!).

But, let me get transparent with you for a minute. This is my dream to be helping all of you, and my husband and I have worked hard for everything we have. It isn’t realistic to think that I could do this blog and keep the kids full time without making any sort of income. Thankfully, because of your readership, you are making that dream come true for me. The dream of being able to work, create and inspire but also be present with my daughters and raise them. I love involving them when possible, even if it’s stressful to bring them along sometimes. It’s worth it to me.

My WHY is these girls. At the end of the day, I do this for them. So that they may know their strength and abilities. So that they may know their worth and see their value beyond what they look like. So they may know the importance of mental health. And so they may know that they can work hard and achieve anything they put their minds to.

SHOP THIS LOOK (everything is currently on SALE, by the way!)

I requested this jumpsuit and I was really nervous about it, as I always am with jumpsuits. I was SO pleasantly surprised at how well it fits!!! I love the tapered leg and the sleeves, and I’m wearing a size 18. I will be rockin’ this all summer, for sure. Lane Bryant has been killing the spring and summer outfit game lately, and I’m not just saying that. Check out all their new stuff, I’m impressed!! This look is perfect for Mother’s Day, or any occasion really. I would also throw sneakers with it to dress it down!
